The legendary TV writer and producer recently sat down on Sherri and revealed that she’s still trying to get a Girlfriends movie off the ground. But there’s one big challenge standing in her way: funding. And not just a little funding—we’re talking $50 million.

“I want to tell that story,” she told host Sherri Shepherd, who also starred in the show. “I’ve tried. Do you know anybody with $50 million? Or five people with $10 million? Let’s do it!”

The audience laughed, but she was only half-joking. Akil made it clear she’s serious about bringing the iconic series back in movie form. While the original show aired from 2000 to 2008, its impact is still felt today. Girlfriends was groundbreaking for its time—showcasing the complexities of friendship, love, and life through the lens of four Black women. It built a loyal following that continues to grow thanks to streaming platforms.

“I just want to thank the audience,” she added. “You haven’t let it go.”

And she’s right. Fans have been calling for a Girlfriends reboot or continuation for years. But as Akil explained, a project like this takes serious money—especially if they want to do it the right way.

In the meantime, Akil is staying busy. She recently inked a deal with Netflix and is working on Forever, a reimagined version of Judy Blume’s coming-of-age story. But her heart is clearly still with Girlfriends, and she’s hoping someone with the right connections (and the cash) will step in and help make the movie happen.
