A recent report has Clevelanders and basketball fans excited of what could be coming soon.

Sports Business Journal reported Sunday that Cleveland is “likely” to be selected as the WNBA’s next city to build a women’s basketball home.

Or maybe we should say “rebuild a women’s basketball team” in Cleveland. Of course the Cleveland Rockers repped Northeast Ohio in the W from 1997 to 2003.

No official decision has been made by the WNBA at this time.

We reported back in November that Rock Entertainment Group formerly submit Cleveland’s bid as a WNBA designation. The league is currently looking for a city to host it’s 16th WNBA franchise.

Cavs Officially Trying To Bring WNBA Team To Cleveland

From News 5 Cleveland:

“It has long been woven into our mission to utilize our platform to unite our community in ways that drive equal opportunities across the board. To that end, we are actively pursuing bringing a WNBA expansion team to Cleveland. Cleveland’s vibrant ecosystem of world-class assets, passionate and engaged sports fans, coupled with a culture that has allowed professional sports to thrive, make our Team and city uniquely positioned to provide an ideal home for the W’s next franchise,” the statement said, in part.

The WNBA and women’s basketball has seen a significant spike in interest over the last two years. Indiana Fever guard Caitlyn Clark is a major reason why. Her final year of college Clark increased ticket sales and TV viewership in every arena she played in. That fortune has carried with her to the WNBA, and the league looks to continue to lean on that momentum.
