2025 is just days away, and a few new laws in Ohio will take effect very soon.

Cell phone and bathroom use in schools, Ohio’s minimum wage, and school-sanctioned religious expression will all receive updates.

Here are the new Ohio laws taking effect in 2025.

Ohio’s New Bathroom Law

Ohio’s new bathroom law, Senate Bill 104, is effective Feb. 25.

This law restricts people in Ohio’s public and private schools, along with Ohio’s colleges and universities, from choosing their shared bathroom, locker room, or public shower based on anything other than their assigned gender at birth.

Ohio’s New School Cellphone Law

The new student cellphone law, House Bill 250, takes effect Jan. 1. In short, it’s designed to limit student’s personal phone usage while in school. It intends to limit distractions for students during school hours.

While the law doesn’t ban cellphone usage completely, it does impact student’s ability to use it during school hours. The new law allows individual school districts to craft their own specific rules, as long as they follow a general guideline laid out by the Ohio Department of Education & Workforce. Approved Absence For Religious Expression

House Bill 214 takes effect on Jan. 1.

This new Ohio law allows students up to three days of approved absence to participate in “religious expression”.

From Yahoo! News:

School principals “shall approve such requests without inquiry into the sincerity of a student’s religious or spiritual belief system,” reads the bill. Principals can, however, verify the absence request by contacting a student’s parent or guardian.
