The legal dispute arose after the Trump campaign used music written by his father, Isaac Hayes, without proper permission. Despite issuing a cease-and-desist order, the campaign continued to use his father’s music 135 times. This led Isaac Hayes III to file a lawsuit to protect the copyrights of the music, underscoring the critical importance of licensing and intellectual property rights in the music industry.

Hayes III explained how his father’s struggle to secure ownership of his music rights deeply influenced his current efforts. The elder Isaac Hayes, a towering figure in the music industry, faced significant challenges throughout his career, from losing control of his masters to battling for fair compensation for his work. For Isaac Hayes III, safeguarding his father’s legacy is not just about protecting his music; it’s about ensuring that Black artists and creators retain control of their work and benefit financially from it.

Running his father’s estate is a delicate balancing act for Hayes III. Beyond the business side of managing copyrights, royalties, and legal disputes, there’s the emotional component of preserving the legacy of a family member whose influence looms large in the world of music. Hayes III also revealed that if a biopic were ever made about his father, he has strong opinions on who should portray the iconic musician. This is part of his broader commitment to ensuring that his father’s story is told with the same care and attention that defined his life and career.
Outside of managing his father’s estate, Isaac Hayes III is also focused on building his own legacy as the CEO of Fanbase, a social media platform designed to give Black creators a space to monetize their content. Hayes described Fanbase as an intentional project, built to create infrastructure for Black culture in the digital age. “We’re inventing things with our culture, but we don’t own the infrastructure,” he explained, emphasizing the need for Black entrepreneurs to create and control their own platforms.
By investing in Black-owned businesses and promoting Black culture, Isaac Hayes III is determined to create opportunities for future generations while continuing to honor his father’s legacy. His work stands as a testament to the power of ownership, both of one’s art and one’s future.
