R&B singer, talk show host, and talented family member Tamar Braxton was on track to adding “dancing champion” to her resume from being on “Dancing With the Stars”, but those dreams came to a halt when she was rushed to the hospital.

Braxton, 38, took to Instagram early on Wednesday, November 11th, to share a photograph of herself in a hospital bed looking glum alongside partner Val Chmerkovskiy to announce she is dropping out of the competition.

“With a heavy heart I regret to inform you that my season of #DWTS has to come to an end,” she wrote, adding that she also will not continue as a special guest on tour with musical artist KEM.

Braxton was rushed to the hospital during dress rehearsal for Monday’s episode. Despite missing most of the show, she was not eliminated from the competition after making a dramatic, last-minute return 20 minutes before the end of the broadcast and participating in a group performance with Nick Carter.

During the show, Chmerkovskiy said Braxton “came on the lot 15 minutes before we danced, sick with pneumonia and exhausted.” But Braxton revealed Wednesday she has been diagnosed with pulmonary embolism.

A pulmonary embolism is a blood clot that occurs in the lungs.

A pulmonary embolism can damage part of the lung due to restricted blood flow, decrease oxygen levels in the blood, and damage other organs. Large or multiple blood clots can be fatal.

Pulmonary embolisms are most often caused by deep vein thrombosis, a condition in which blood clots form in veins deep in the body. The blood clots that most often cause pulmonary embolisms typically begin…

…in the legs or arms.

Factors that increase your risk of developing deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism include:

  • cancer
  • family history
  • fractures of the leg or hip
  • genetic blood clotting disorders
  • major surgery

“I went back to the hospital (after the doctors didn’t want me to leave in the first place),” writes Braxton. “Only to find out that I don’t have pneumonia but something way more serious and that is having several P.E.’s (blood clots in both sides of my lungs),” Braxton wrote. “As you all know I will be the first to always encourage anyone to push through any obstacle that comes along one’s way. But in this case, my health is my current obstacle. .. And in TRUE #tamartian form I must go about this the exact same way as I would anything else. I woke up to a mirror and saw myself this morning and that makes me the winner because that almost wasn’t the case. Take care of yourselves… I love you and thank you ALL for your support.”

After treatment, Braxton will go through a round of medications to treat the origial cause of the pulmonary embolism. Recovery also includes exercise and heavily monitoring diet and blood flow.

Here’s to wishing Tamar a speedy recovery!
