AKRON, OH (WOIO) –

Akron police say a Yellow Cab driver was beaten with a brick and then robbed of his cab, cell phone and wallet.

The assault happened around 11:30 Tuesday night. Police say the cab driver picked up the passenger in the 800 block of West Market Street and drove to the 500 block of Howe Street.

The suspect then pulled a brick out of his pocket and struck the cab driver in the face with it, leaving the driver with minor injuries.

The cab was recovered with three flat tires around 2:30 this morning, at West South Street and West Bowery Street.

Following the robbery, detectives were checking local businesses for the suspect. As a plain clothed detective pulled into a gas station parking lot in the 600 block of East Market Street, the suspect involved in the robbery of the cab driver, walked up to the detectives car. The suspect offered to use his credit card to purchase $40.00 in gas for the detective, in exchange for $10.00 in cash. The detective then stepped out of his car and arrested the suspect.

Suspect Gary P. Brainard, Jr., 42, was taken to the Summit County Jail without incident and charged with Aggravated Robbery, Tampering with Evidence, Theft, Forgery and Misuse of a Credit Card.
